From November to December 2015, I participated in the Booosting Architect Workshop entitled ‘Designing in the Factory’ (Ontwerpen in de Fabriek) part III, organised in collaboration with Studio RAP. The aim of the workshop was to design and build an object while taking into consideration the physical laws of EPS and the boundary conditions a hot-wire cutting robot. Our final design is a zero-waste structure, designed by means of a parametric approach in Rhino/Grasshopper. Behold… our ‘Matroesjka‘. On October 8, I judged the KOers Design Challenge – Floating Structures at the Eindhoven University of Technology. An inspiring event with lots of ingenuity and innovation on designing floating structures. The main objective was to design and build(!) a structure that is able withstand loads with as little deformation as possible.

On 16 August 2015, I led the Tektoniek workshop on Flexible Moulding – Vacuumatics during the ISOFF 2015 Symposium (International Society of Flexible Forming), which was held together with the IASS 2015 Symposium (International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures) in Amsterdam. During the workshop a variety of objects in Ultra High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) have been created. The aim was to explore the potential of the formwork technique for producing (potentially topology-optimised) ribbed structures in concrete.

On 1 June 2015 at the annual Constructeursdag, I was proudly awarded Young Engineer Talent of 2015 (‘Jong Constructeurs-talent 2015’) by the Betonvereniging, Bouwen met Staal, VNConstructeurs and YouCon. Both Maurice Hermens (Royal HaskoningDHV) and Frank Kaalberg (Witteveen+Bos Raadgevende Ingenieurs BV) have been awarded Engineer of the Year 2015 (‘Constructeur van het Jaar 2015’).

On 1 June 2015, I gave a lecture at the annual Constructeursdag, which was held at the new National Military Museum (NMM) in Soesterberg. This year’s theme was ‘Innovation’.  In the lecture, I presentated how we (ABT Consulting Engineers) approached the structural design of the roof structure of the National Military Museum by using parametric design and optimisation tools to reduce the weight of the roof structure, which has led to a considerable reduction of building costs and in terms of production in a reduction of CO2 emission.

During the annual student Concrete Canoe Race (‘BetonKanoRace’), held on 29-31 May 2015, students of the study society KOers of the Eindhoven University of Technology have won the Innovation Price for the third time in a row. The price was awarded for using an innovative vacuum-infusion technique for producing of a concrete canoe. The idea of using a vacuum-infusion technique for producing thin-walled free-form structures in concrete has originated from my PhD research on Vacuumatics.

On 2 April 2015, I took part in a public discussion on Digital Craftmanship at Building Holland in Amsterdam RAI, together with Marcel Bilow (TU Delft) and Wessel van Beerendonk (Studio RAP). Amongst other things we stated that the (inevitable) use of digital design and manufacturing tools in the building industry should always go hand in hand with practical knowledge of the materials used, which is ideally to be derived from hands-on exploration. The discussion was organised by Booosting in collaboration with Stedebouw en Architectuur.

At the annual Symposium Voor en Door Staalconstructeurs, held on 28 November 2013 at Zonneveld Ingenieurs in Rotterdam, I was asked to give a presentation about the structural optimisation of the steel roof of the new National Military Museum in Soesterberg. At the chair of Innovative Structural Design (ISD) of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) I supervised the Master research project of Laurens Ensink entitled: ‘Vacuumatics: Numerical Simulations in DEM’, which he presented succesfully on 16 January 2013. The aim of this project was to validate the numerical DEM simulations with experimental tests results and exploring the internal force distribution, based on specific particle properties and packing characteristics.

The article entitled ‘Free Forms with Vacuum-Infused Concrete’ (in Dutch: ‘Vrije Vormen met Vacuüminfusie-Beton’) is published on BouwIQ-online. The article describes the outcome of a Master-research project that was carried out at the chair of ‘Innovative Structural Design’ (ISD) of the Eindhoven University of Technology by Master students Mark Slotboom and Omar Sarfatij. The aim of this project was to explore the potential of combining the technology of vacuum infusion, ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) and vacuumatics, to create easily producible, free forms in ultra high performance concrete.

At the workshop entitled Fluidity | Adaptability | Rigidity: Frontiers in Applied Jamming, held on 26-28 October 2012 at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois (USA), I gave a lecture about my PhD research on Vacuumatics 3D Formwork Systems. The goal of this workshop was to bring together scientists, engineers and architects to discuss the structural and functional properties of jammed systems and to assess their potential for designed applications.

At the chair of Innovative Structural Design (ISD) of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) I supervised the graduation project of Ruben Smittenaar entitled: ‘Numerical Simulation of Vacuumatically Prestressed Structures’, which he finished with success on 28 August 2012. This specific research provides us with detailed information on the structural behaviour of Vacuumatics. The results of this specific research will be published in a journal article.

At the chair of Innovative Structural Design (ISD) of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) I supervised the Master research project of Mark Slotboom and Omar Sarfaty entitled: ‘Vacuumatics: Structurally Efficient Concrete Structures’, which they presented succesfully on 21 June 2012. The aim of this project was to explore the potential of using vacuumatics to create structurally efficient concrete structures by means of vacuum infusion. Experimental research illustrated that the combination of free-form vacuumatics and vacuum infusion is possible. The vacuumatic structure is able to carry the load of the cement-water during the curing process.

On 20 June 2012, I gave a presentation about my PhD research during the Constructeursdag, held at De Flint Theater in Amersfoort. Furthermore, together with two students of the Eindhoven University of Technology (Mark Slotboom and Omar Sarfaty), I performed a critical load failure test on an arch-shaped vacuumatic structure live on stage. The simplicity and speed of manipulating the vacuumatic structure into its intended curved shape was clearly illustrated. Amongst the audience a contest was held to ‘guess’ the load-bearing capacity of this specific vacuumatic structure.

The aim of this project was to explore the potential of using vacuumatics as a self-supporting flexible formwork structure. A customised concrete shell structure, which was realised by means of vacuumatics formwork, has been exposed at Plaza Vertigo at the TU/e as well as at ABT bv in Velp.

At the chair of Innovative Structural Design (ISD) of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) I supervised the Master research project of Lianne Tas entitled: ‘Structural Behaviour of Vacuumatics’, which she presented succesfully on 9 June 2010. The aim of this project was to investigate the flexural rigidity of vacuumatically prestressed structures, by conducting a series of four-point bending tests. This research in particular examined the influence of the grain size, the influence of the vacuum pressure and the influence of the application of reinforcement on the overall bending behaviour.
